Canada: Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Justin Trudeau claimed that a US fighter jet shot down an “unidentified object” over Canadian airspace.

“I ordered the take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace. @NORADCommand shot down the object over the Yukon. Canadian and U.S. aircraft were scrambled, and a U.S. F-22 successfully fired at the object,” Mr. Trudeau Tweeted.

Ms. Anita Anand, Canada’s Defense Minister, stated that the object was “cylindrical” and smaller than the alleged Chinese balloon that was shot down over the weekend. The Pentagon said that the object was first sighted over Alaska and the White House confirmed that Mr. Trudeau and US President Mr. Joe Biden confirmed the shoot-down.

The object recovery mission will be overseen by the Canadian military, as per Mr. Trudeau, who claimed to have spoken with Mr. Biden. The target was destroyed the third time in a week that US aircraft damaged an object in North American airspace occurred. The incident comes after the shooting down of a second unidentified object over Alaska on Friday and the downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon by a US F-22 fighter jet on 4th February 2023.

The origin of the object that was shot down over Canada and its connection to the spy balloon that was shot down last week and the mystery object that was shot down over Alaska are both unknown. According to a readout of a call between the two leaders released by the White House, both Mr. Biden and Mr. Trudeau approved the removal of the object. The leaders “discussed the importance of recovering the object in order to determine more details on its purpose or origin,” the statement regarding the call states.
