Ukraine: Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, met Mr. Rishi Sunak on his arrival in the UK for the first time since Russia’s invasion. Before meeting with King Charles and delivering a speech to Parliament, he had a visit with the British prime minister in Downing Street.

This development coincides with plans to expand UK training of the Ukrainian military to include fighter aircraft pilots and marines. Moreover, the UK has disclosed a new round of sanctions targeted at Russia. The most recent sanctions target IT firms as well as companies that produce military equipment like drones and helicopter parts.

A crucial request from Ukraine has been met with plans to train Ukrainian pilots to operate fighter jets up to NATO standards in the future. As Ukraine prepares for a new Russian offensive later this month, Western nations have been debating how to strengthen their support for that nation.

After declaring it “not practical” for it to send its aircraft to Ukraine, the UK’s training program has expanded, signalling a shift. British military jets are “extremely sophisticated and take months to learn how to fly,” Mr. Sunak’s spokesman told reporters last week.

Speaking with @RishiSunak, I thanked for start training ?? crews on Challengers. We talked about further expanding the capabilities of the ?? army, all-round support for Ukraine in the short & long term. I emphasized: representatives of the aggressor have no place at @Paris2024.

Challenger 2 tanks will be sent to Ukraine by the UK, and Ukrainian personnel will receive instructions on how to handle them. This has already been announced by the UK. The unexpected trip to London by President Mr. Zelensky marks only his second overseas trip since Russia invaded in February of last year.
