Cairo, Egypt: At the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), currently held in Egypt, the Southeast Asian country of Vietnam has reaffirmed its firm commitment to combating climate change.

In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), Vietnamese delegation leader and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr. Tran Hong Ha, pointed out that Vietnam and other countries attending the conference will work to improve systems and policies to mobilize resources from developed countries in order to fulfill their commitments.

The resources should be distributed to developing and underprivileged countries that are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change fairly and transparently, the minister shared.

Vietnamese minister emphasized the need for an energy transition, for which Vietnam has laid out a detailed road map, as a response to climate change.

Mr. Tranm Hong Ha remarked that, “The Vietnamese government has issued a strategy on climate change and assigned specific tasks to ministries, agencies, and localities.”

Vietnamese Climate Leadership with 3 Main Objectives

Utilizing both its own internal resources and the assistance of the international community, particularly through the mechanisms of the COP26 agreement made in the UK last year, Vietnam is making every effort to carry out its responsibilities.

Mr. Tranm Hong Ha continued stating that the Vietnamese delegation to COP27 has three main responsibilities. One of them is to work with other UNFCCC members to find ways to implement the agreements and mechanisms made, as well as to propose new initiatives, mechanisms, and policies to solidly implement the energy transition.

Maintaining Vietnam’s leadership position in the energy transition, green transition, and digital transformation is the second task. The third is to mobilize resources, learn from the experience of developed partners, and participate in more initiatives, particularly those related to financial mobilization and the energy transition.

The group will meet with major financial institutions, including the World Bank, and conduct many bilateral operations with international organizations and companies related to the energy transformation.

Vietnamese Minister highlighted that COP27 is a chance for Vietnam to engage with top international organizations and financial institutions to talk about financial processes and policies as well as how to mobilize resources for Vietnam.

During the event, Vietnam will keep up its conversations with partners from the G7 and the enlarged G7 about a fair energy transition for the country and how to best take advantage of opportunities for preferential financing and technology transfer to fulfill its net-zero commitments.
