Germany, France prepare for Halloween protest weekend

This weekend’s demonstrations reflect growing youth anger over living costs, education and limited opportunities, prompting heightened security measures in Germany and France.

Berlin: Germany and France are preparing for a fresh wave of demonstrations over the Halloween weekend as youth-led protests over rising living costs, education and limited opportunities continue to spread across Europe.

In Germany, approximately 150,000 people have registered to take part in protests across about 30 cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt and Cologne. Police are planning to deploy thousands of additional officers to manage the demonstrations and prevent possible unrest. Some luxury jewellery shops and clothing retailers have already boarded up their windows as a precaution against looting and damage.

The German movement, known as GenZ regelt!, brought together young demonstrators frustrated by the high cost of living, poorly maintained schools and government spending cuts. Protesters also criticised political decisions that they believe give insufficient consideration to the needs and future prospects of younger generations.

The demonstrations form part of a wider movement that spreads across several European countries in recent weeks. Protesters raise concerns about rising prices, declining standards in educational facilities and a lack of opportunities for young people.

France is preparing for another weekend of demonstrations after protests have continued across the country for three consecutive weekends. Shops and businesses in Paris and other cities have begun protecting their premises ahead of the planned rallies.

Alain Di Crescenzo, President of France’s Chamber of Commerce, expresses concern about the impact on businesses. Di Crescenzo noted that shopkeepers were anxious for the weekend to pass, adding that Halloween could complicate security efforts because some people would be wearing masks.

French authorities are deploying 70,000 police officers nationwide. More than 40 metro stations in Paris are also expected to close. Officials remarked that face-covering masks will not be permitted at demonstrations as security forces prepare for possible violence during Halloween celebrations.

France’s interior minister has warned of a very high risk of public disorder. Two weeks ago, protests over living costs and school conditions escalated into widespread looting and riots in several cities and towns. Further demonstrations took place last weekend, with intermittent clashes between protesters and police despite increased security measures.

The preparations in both countries reflect growing pressure from youth-led movements demanding better public services and stronger economic prospects. Authorities are seeking to maintain public order while demonstrations coincide with Halloween events.
