Steve Johnson, director of lexicography for Dictionary Media Group, described the term as a reflection of a culture increasingly focused on getting the most out of everything. However, the expanding use of ‘maxxing’ also allows people to mock the pressure to pursue constant improvement or describe ordinary activities in exaggerated terms.
The word has roots in earlier internet communities and gaming terminology, while the phrase ‘chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all cool” featured in the opening theme of the television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air during the 1990s. Social media has since helped the term spread into everyday conversations.
Dictionary.com also considered ‘affordability,’ ‘data center,’ ‘odyssey’ and ‘unc’ for the annual recognition. The selection follows ’67,’ the dictionary’s 2025 Word of the Year, highlighting the influence of online culture on contemporary language.
