Gaza markets see goods return as affordability crisis grows

This return of goods to Gaza markets fails to ease hardship as high prices and low incomes continue to limit access for struggling families.

Gaza: The goods flow back into Gaza markets, but the affordability crisis persists as high prices and limited incomes continue to prevent residents from purchasing basic food items.

Some goods reappears in local markets after months of shortages linked to Israel’s blockade and ongoing war. Availability has improved in recent weeks. However, access remains restricted for many families due to high costs and reduced purchasing power.

Prices continue to rise as supply chains remain strained. Costs linked to transport and limited entry routes have pushed market rates higher. At the same time, many households have exhausted savings. Employment opportunities have declined sharply, leaving little income to support daily needs.

Shop owners face mounting pressure as the food remains available on shelves, yet customers often lack the means to pay. This imbalance creates daily challenges for traders attempting to sustain operations while meeting community needs.

The United Nations (UN) reported persistent food insecurity across Gaza. The World Food Programme noted that increased entry of commercial and humanitarian supplies over the past two months has not eased affordability concerns. More households now report difficulty purchasing goods despite improved availability.

Economic collapse across the territory continues to shape daily life. Large sections of the population remain displaced. Without stable income sources, reliance on aid has grown. Reconstruction efforts have yet to begin at scale, limiting any meaningful economic recovery.

UN data reflects the severity of the situation. The food consumer price index stands at 102 percent above pre-war levels. This sharp increase highlights the gap between supply and affordability. Sustainable recovery requires job creation and income generation.

Analysts indicate that restoring market supply alone cannot stabilise the economy. Without these, households remain unable to engage with local Gaza markets. The current conditions suggest continued dependence on humanitarian support as economic pressures persist across Gaza.
