San Francisco: Anthropic has launched Opus 5, the latest addition to its Claude family of artificial intelligence models, offering performance close to its flagship Fable 5 model at roughly half the cost.

The San Francisco-based AI startup said Opus 5 is designed for everyday workplace tasks, including computer programming, document creation and other office applications. The company said the new model delivers greater efficiency than Opus 4.8, which was introduced in May, while making advanced AI capabilities more accessible to users.

Anthropic Product Leader Dianne Penn said the release reflects the company’s rapid pace of development and its goal of consistently improving frontier AI systems while reducing costs. According to the company, users seeking value for routine work may find Opus 5 a better choice, while Fable 5 remains better suited for long-running and highly autonomous projects.

The company also said Opus 5 performed better on safety measures than several existing Claude models. Internal testing found the model was less capable of exploiting cyber vulnerabilities and less susceptible to misuse through prompt manipulation, allowing Anthropic to apply less restrictive safeguards than those used for Fable 5.

Fable 5, released in June, was temporarily unavailable after US authorities raised concerns that its advanced capabilities could be diverted for foreign military intelligence purposes. Anthropic said the safety profile of Opus 5 allowed the company to balance performance with broader accessibility.

Responding to questions about Moonshot AI’s open-weight Kimi K3 model from China, Dianne Penn said it remains unclear how open-weight AI systems will perform on complex real-world projects. Unlike proprietary models, open-weight models allow users to download, run and customise the underlying AI system on their own hardware.
