New Jersey: Spain were crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time victory over defending champions Argentina in a thrilling final at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

After 90 minutes of intense action ended without a goal, Spain finally found the breakthrough in extra time when Ferran Torres calmly finished a well-worked attacking move to hand La Roja their second FIFA World Cup title. The victory marked Spain’s first World Cup triumph since their historic success in 2010.

The final attracted more than 82,000 spectators, who witnessed a tactical battle between two of international football’s biggest nations. Spain controlled much of the possession and consistently threatened the Argentine goal, while Argentina relied on quick counter-attacks and moments of brilliance from captain Lionel Messi.

Despite several opportunities, both teams were unable to break the deadlock during regulation time. Spain’s disciplined defence kept Argentina’s attacking stars quiet, while goalkeeper Emiliano MartĂnez made a series of important saves to keep the reigning champions in the contest.

Argentina’s task became even more difficult in stoppage time when midfielder Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card and sent off for a challenge on Spain defender Pau CubarsĂ. Reduced to ten men, Argentina were forced to defend deep as Spain intensified their attacks in extra time.

Substitute Nico Williams injected fresh energy into Spain’s frontline and nearly opened the scoring with a powerful header that MartĂnez brilliantly denied. Moments later, Spain’s persistence paid off as Ferran Torres found space inside the penalty area and clinically fired the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations among Spanish supporters.

Argentina pushed forward in search of an equaliser despite being a man down, but Spain’s organised defence held firm until the final whistle. As the match ended, Spanish players and fans celebrated a memorable triumph, while Argentina’s players were left heartbroken after failing to defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022.

The defeat is expected to bring an emotional close to Lionel Messi’s FIFA World Cup career, with the Argentine legend leaving the tournament as one of football’s greatest-ever players. Although Argentina missed out on a fourth World Cup title, their journey to another final further cemented their place among the world’s elite football nations.

For Spain, the victory represents a new golden chapter in the country’s football history. Combining an energetic young squad with experienced leaders, Spain added the FIFA World Cup trophy to their recent European Championship success, reaffirming their status as one of the strongest teams in international football. Their triumph in 2026 joins the unforgettable World Cup victory of 2010, making Spain two-time world champions.
