Miami: Lionel Messi once again proved why he remains Argentina’s most influential player, delivering another match-winning performance as the reigning world champions edged Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in a thrilling World Cup clash.

The victory highlighted Messi’s enduring brilliance but also reinforced concerns that Argentina continues to rely heavily on their captain in crucial moments.

Having inspired Argentina to their long-awaited World Cup triumph in 2022, Messi once again stepped up when it mattered most, dictating play and providing the spark whenever his teammates struggled to break down their opponents.

The 39-year-old has now matched his tally of seven goals from the Qatar World Cup, continuing to rewrite records while proving age has done little to diminish his impact on the biggest stage.

Despite ongoing praise for Messi’s remarkable longevity, questions remain over Argentina’s dependence on the veteran forward and how long coach Lionel Scaloni can continue relying on him to solve the team’s toughest challenges.

The atmosphere in Miami felt like a home game for Argentina, with thousands of supporters dressed in the nation’s famous blue and white colours, while a passionate group of Cape Verde fans added to the vibrant occasion.

Messi was once again named Man of the Match, orchestrating nearly every attacking move from the opening whistle. Argentina’s breakthrough came after a hydration break disrupted Cape Verde’s momentum.

Messi expertly controlled a long pass with his first touch before calmly finishing from a tight angle to give his side the lead.

Cape Verde responded strongly after the break, with Deroy Duarte equalising shortly before the hour mark and forcing Argentina to search for another breakthrough.

As the pressure mounted, Argentina naturally turned to Messi, who remained at the centre of virtually every attack. His movement and creativity constantly drew defenders, while he also took responsibility for free kicks and corner kicks throughout the contest.

Although he was unable to score directly from a free kick, his set-piece deliveries proved decisive. A well-placed corner created the opportunity for Lisandro Martínez to score, before another pinpoint delivery led to the decisive goal as Cristian Romero headed home via a deflection.

The dramatic victory once again underlined Messi’s unmatched influence. Just as he was central to Argentina’s successful World Cup campaign in 2022, the team continues to depend on him during the most critical moments.

While Argentina possess one of football’s greatest-ever players, Friday’s performance also served as another reminder that their hopes of further World Cup success remain closely tied to Messi’s extraordinary ability.
