Dallas: Portugal booked a place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 after Goncalo Ramos scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory over Croatia. The thrilling knockout match saw Cristiano Ronaldo score from the penalty spot before Ramos sealed the win in the 94th minute.

Croatia took the lead early in the second half when Ivan Perisic finished from close range after Portugal failed to clear a dangerous cross. The Croatian side thought a second goal had followed moments later, but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Portugal responded with increased attacking pressure and eventually found an equaliser through Ronaldo. The Portugal captain converted a penalty after VAR spotted a foul inside the penalty area, scoring the first World Cup knockout-stage goal of an international career that has spanned six tournaments.

The match remained evenly balanced as both teams created several chances. Croatia came close through Mateo Kovacic and Igor Matanovic, while Rafael Leao struck the crossbar for Portugal. With extra time approaching, Ramos rose above two defenders to head home Leao’s cross and send Portugal into the next round.

Croatia thought the match had been rescued deep into stoppage time when Josko Gvardiol found the net. However, another VAR review ruled the goal out for offside, ending Croatia’s hopes of forcing extra time and confirming Portugal’s dramatic victory.

Portugal will now face European champions Spain in the FIFA World Cup last 16. The victory also marked an emotional night for Ronaldo, who became the oldest player to start a World Cup knockout match before celebrating qualification with teammates and supporters.
