New Jersey: France secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden to book a place in the FIFA World Cup last 16, with Kylian Mbappe delivering another outstanding performance. The France captain scored twice to become the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup knockout matches and continued an impressive run in the tournament.
France dominated from the opening whistle despite difficult playing conditions in New Jersey. Kylian Mbappe came close to scoring early after an offside call ruled out one effort before another shot struck the post. Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele also created dangerous opportunities as Sweden struggled to contain the French attack.
The breakthrough finally arrived just before half-time when Mbappe collected a perfectly weighted pass from Dembele, skipped past a defender with a clever stepover and calmly finished into the far corner. Sweden had a chance to equalise immediately after the restart but failed to convert the opportunity.

France doubled the advantage eight minutes into the second half as Bradley Barcola finished confidently after a precise pass from Michael Olise. The attacking trio of Mbappe, Olise and Dembele continued to trouble Sweden’s defence, while goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom made several important saves to prevent an even bigger defeat.
Mbappe completed the scoring in the 74th minute after another excellent assist from Olise, curling a precise effort beyond the Swedish goalkeeper. The second goal took the France captain to 10 goals in World Cup knockout matches, setting a new tournament record while also moving level with Lionel Messi on six goals in the race for the Golden Boot.
The victory extended France’s unbeaten run in the tournament and reinforced the team’s status as one of the favourites to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy. France will next face Paraguay in the last 16, while Sweden’s campaign came to an end after a determined but ultimately unsuccessful performance.
