Shreveport: A devastating act of domestic violence has left a community in mourning after eight children were killed in a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Police said the victims, aged between one and 14, were among 10 people shot in what authorities described as a ‘domestic disturbance’. The incident began around 05:00 local time, with officers responding to multiple crime scenes across a residential neighbourhood.
According to investigators, a single gunman opened fire inside a home on West 79th Street before the violence spread to nearby locations, including a residence on Harrison Street. All eight fatalities were juveniles, officials confirmed.
The suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, allegedly fled the scene after the shooting, carjacking a vehicle in an attempt to escape. Police pursued the suspect into neighbouring Bossier Parish, where officers fatally shot him following a chase.

Authorities believe the attacker acted alone. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the incident as one of the darkest moments in the city’s history. Police Chief Wayne Smith said the scale of the tragedy was difficult to comprehend. Wayne Smith remarked that, “I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur,” adding that a full investigation is underway with support from the Louisiana State Police and other agencies.
Officials revealed that some of the victims were related to the suspect, reinforcing the domestic nature of the incident. Several injured individuals remain in the hospital receiving treatment. Local leaders highlighted the broader issue of domestic violence, with councilman Grayson Boucher noting that a significant portion of violent crimes in the city are linked to domestic situations.
State and national leaders also expressed their condolences. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, the attack marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since January 2024. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to piece together the circumstances that led to the tragedy, while a grieving community struggles to come to terms with the loss.
