Mumbai: India is mourning the loss of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai, following a heart attack.

The two-time Grammy nominee, whose extraordinary career spanned nearly eight decades, leaves behind a legacy that shaped the sound of Indian cinema across generations. Bhosle had been admitted to a Mumbai hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest. Her last rites are scheduled to take place at Shivaji Park with full state honours, as the nation bids farewell to one of its most iconic voices.

Tributes pour in from across India and beyond

An outpouring of grief has followed her passing, with leaders, artists, and fans paying tribute to her unparalleled contributions to the music world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described her as ‘one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known,’ while President Droupadi Murmu called her death ‘an irreparable loss to music lovers.’

भावपूर्ण गीतांपासून ते जोशपूर्ण… pic.twitter.com/JsjoxbdCCt

Tributes also flooded in from the entertainment and sports worlds. Actor Shah Rukh Khan said her voice would resonate worldwide for centuries, while cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar remembered her fondly as ‘family,’ adding that her songs would remain eternal.

Music composer A. R. Rahman noted that, “She lives forever through her voice and aura,” while singer Shreya Ghoshal credited Bhosle as a lifelong inspiration. Actor-singer Farhan Akhtar described her voice as ‘irreplaceable.’

    Nation honours her legacy

Crowds gathered outside her residence in Mumbai to pay their final respects, reflecting the deep emotional connection millions shared with her music. During an Indian Premier League match, players observed a minute’s silence, highlighting her influence beyond music.

Globally, her impact was equally significant. British band Cornershop, whose hit song Brimful of Asha paid tribute to her, acknowledged her rare ability to connect across languages and cultures.

A career that defined indian cinema

Born in 1933 into a family of musicians, Bhosle began singing at a young age alongside her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar. Despite early personal and professional challenges, she carved out a distinct identity in the industry.

Her breakthrough came in the 1950s through collaborations with composer O. P. Nayyar, followed by a celebrated partnership with R. D. Burman, whom she later married. Known for her versatility, she effortlessly transitioned between romantic melodies, classical compositions, and bold, experimental tracks.

    Still evolving in later years

Even in her later years, Bhosle continued to innovate. She collaborated with the virtual band Gorillaz on their 2026 album The Mountain, showcasing her enduring relevance and artistic curiosity.

Beyond music, she was also known for her culinary passion and entrepreneurial ventures, including her restaurant chain ‘Asha’s,’ which gained international recognition.

A voice that will never fade

With thousands of recordings in multiple languages, Asha Bhosle’s voice became synonymous with Indian cinema’s evolution. Her ability to bring emotion, energy, and uniqueness to every song ensured her place as one of the greatest singers in history. As India mourns her passing, her music continues to echo, timeless, universal, and unforgettable.
