This move has highlighted a shift in Apple’s approach to AI development as competition in smartphone technology continues to intensify.

Cupertino: Apple has entered into a multi-year collaboration with Google to use Gemini artificial intelligence models to power several of its services, including major upgrades to Siri.

Apple and Google have said the partnership is designed to deliver innovative experiences for users while maintaining Apple’s established privacy standards.

Apple has confirmed that its generative AI platform, Apple Intelligence, will continue to operate within Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system. This structure allows advanced processing while ensuring user data protection remains a priority. The companies have said that Apple evaluated different technologies before selecting Google’s AI as the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models.

Industry analysts have said the decision reflects Apple’s cautious progress in developing large-scale AI tools internally. IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said that, by relying on Google’s Gemini technology, Apple has acknowledged that competing at scale in the short term was difficult. The move has been described as a pragmatic strategy, though it departs from Apple’s long-standing preference to control every layer of its technology.

Historically, Apple has designed most of its systems in-house, giving the company tight integration between hardware, software and services. Analysts have said the partnership signals a shift in priorities as artificial intelligence becomes essential for modern smartphones. The demand for AI-driven tools such as enhanced voice assistants and smart content generation has continued to grow as competitors expand their AI capabilities.

Apple users have increasingly compared Siri with assistants offered by Google, Samsung and other manufacturers. Analysts have suggested that while AI was not initially a key factor influencing smartphone purchases, adoption is expected to rise steadily as AI-powered services become more advanced and practical in daily use.

This is not the first time Apple has partnered with an AI company. In June 2024, Apple announced cooperation with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence. That move allowed users to access advanced conversational tools directly within Apple’s ecosystem. The agreement with Google builds on this approach by expanding Apple’s access to large-scale AI models.

Technology analyst Paolo Pescatore said that Apple’s financial results indicated AI was not yet the primary driver for iPhone upgrades, but this trend is expected to change. As artificial intelligence becomes more embedded in daily smartphone tasks, demand for smarter assistants and automation tools is likely to grow.

Apple and Google have stated that despite the collaboration, Apple Intelligence will continue running on Apple devices and within Apple-controlled infrastructure. The companies have emphasised that privacy protection will remain consistent with Apple’s existing standards.

The partnership has underlined how rapidly AI development has reshaped the technology sector. For Apple, the agreement has represented both a strategic adjustment and a way to remain competitive as consumer expectations around artificial intelligence continue to evolve.
