Los Angeles: Nearly two decades after the first film, a sequel to The Simpsons Movie has officially been announced. 20th Century Studios confirmed that the new film is set to release on 23 July 2027.
The announcement was accompanied by a poster shared on Instagram, showing a doughnut being grabbed and featuring the tagline: ‘Homer’s coming back for seconds.’
Created by Matt Groening in 1989, The Simpsons follows the daily lives of the Simpson family, Homer, Marge, and their three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The show has aired 37 seasons and has been renewed through season 40, making it the longest-running animated prime-time show in US television history.

The original film, released in July 2007, depicted Homer accidentally polluting Springfield’s water supply, leading the Environmental Protection Agency to enclose the town under a dome. Homer was tasked with saving both the city and his family. The film earned more than $500 million globally and ended with baby Maggie quietly saying ‘sequel?’ in the credits.
Over the years, a follow-up has been discussed multiple times. In 2014, James L. Brooks, executive producer and co-writer of the original movie, revealed that Fox had approached him about a sequel. However, in 2024, Al Jean, writer and executive producer of the series, stated that there had been no formal discussions or script development, citing delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jean explained that Disney had been monitoring the performance of Inside Out 2 in cinemas, particularly after several Disney animated films underperformed at the box office.
After Inside Out 2 grossed $1.6 billion, briefly becoming the highest-grossing animated film globally until surpassed by Ne Zha 2, Disney deemed the timing right for a theatrical release of The Simpsons sequel. No plot details for the upcoming movie have been revealed.
The Simpsons is also notable for its longevity, having aired nearly 800 episodes over 36 years, making it the longest-running animated and scripted prime-time show in the US Last year, voice actress Pamela Hayden, known for characters including Milhouse, Jimbo, and Rod and Todd Flanders, announced her retirement from the series.
In a tongue-in-cheek reference to the show’s long history, the season 36 premiere was promoted as the series finale, humorously noting that eternally 10-year-old Bart had finally turned 11.
