Washington DC: Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party, the America Party, just weeks after a dramatic falling-out with US President Donald Trump.
The billionaire made the declaration on his social media platform, X, positioning the new party as a direct challenge to the long-standing Republican and Democratic two-party system.
While the announcement marks a bold political step, it remains unclear whether the America Party has been officially registered with US election authorities.

The Federal Electoral Commission had not published any registration documents, and Musk has not yet disclosed who will lead the party or how it will be structured.
The idea of forming a new party gained traction during Musk’s public feud with Trump, which began after Musk resigned from his role in the Trump administration in May.
The billionaire had been appointed to head the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created to recommend sweeping cuts to federal spending. However, Musk openly criticized Trump’s major tax and spending legislation, dubbed by Trump as his ‘big, beautiful bill,’ which was narrowly passed by Congress and signed into law this week.
The law contains expansive tax cuts and massive spending commitments, and it is projected to increase the US federal deficit by over $3 trillion over the next decade. Musk’s opposition to the bill marked a clear break from his former ally, despite having supported Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign with a $250 million donation.
During the fallout, Musk had posted a poll on X asking followers whether the US needed a new political party. Referencing the poll results in his post, Musk wrote that, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Despite the bold announcement, the future of the America Party remains uncertain as key details about its leadership, policies, and organizational structure have yet to be disclosed.
