Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited King Charles III and Queen Camilla to formally open Canada’s 45th Parliament on 27 May. The monarch’s visit will be the first time a reigning King has delivered the Throne Speech since 1977.

“This is a historic honour that matches the weight of our times,” Carney said during his post-election address in Ottawa. Prime Minister Carney called the event a powerful symbol of Canadian sovereignty. The move directly counters President Trump’s remarks about Canada becoming America’s 51st state.

Carney also confirmed that he will travel to Washington on Tuesday for his first official meeting with President Donald Trump.” My government will fight to get the best deal for Canada,” he said, adding there will be no rush toward agreements.

The two leaders will discuss newly imposed tariffs and broader cross-border economic cooperation between the longstanding allies. Carney expects “difficult but constructive” talks focused on shared interests and mutual respect.

His strategy includes diversifying global partnerships to reduce dependency on unpredictable trade relationships. He recently held talks with leaders across Europe and Asia, seeking to build stronger economic bridges. Canada’s recent federal election revealed political and regional divisions that Carney said must be addressed immediately.

Although the Liberal Party secured 168 of 343 seats, the result falls short of the 172 needed for a majority government. Carney extended an olive branch to both political opponents and citizens who did not support his party’s platform. The new Cabinet will be sworn in during the week beginning 12 May, with the King’s visit shortly thereafter.

The Prime Minister Carney stated that, “It’s time to come together, put on our Team Canada sweaters, and win big”. Canada is entering a pivotal moment shaped by diplomacy, unity, and sovereignty with all eyes on Ottawa and Washington.
