Las Vegas: The highly anticipated Avatar sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will introduce new adversaries and challenges for Jake Sully and his family on the moon of Pandora, director James Cameron revealed at CinemaCon, where Walt Disney premiered the film’s first footage.

Scheduled for release in December, the film continues the saga of the blue-skinned Na’vi people, with Sam Worthington reprising his role as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana returning as Neytiri.

Cameron, speaking via video from New Zealand, where he is finalizing the movie, said the Sully family will endure intense struggles against both human invaders and a new enemy—the Ash People.

“I’m sending you a reel to give a taste of the spectacle and the increased emotional heart and soul,” Cameron told attendees.

The Director expressed hope that the film would boost cinema attendance, as box office sales in the US and Canada are currently 11% lower than last year.

The Avatar franchise remains a major box office success, with the first film still holding the record as the highest-grossing movie of all time, while its sequel ranks third behind Avengers: Endgame.

Zoe Saldana, appearing in person at CinemaCon, also teased the introduction of a new group—the Wind Traders, a peaceful, nomadic clan that travels through the air.

Cameron acknowledged the ongoing struggles faced by theater owners following the pandemic and the rise of streaming, stating, “I hope this film can provide a shot in the arm for theater owners.”
