Beverly Hills: The 2025 Golden Globes nominations have been unveiled, with Netflix’s Spanish-language musical thriller Emilia Perez and A24’s post-World War Two Epic The Brutalist topping the list.
Emilia Perez scored 10 nominations, while The Brutalist garnered seven, placing them as strong contenders for the coveted Best Film Drama award.
Both films will face stiff competition in the best film drama category, going up against an eclectic mix of nominees: the papal election drama Conclave, Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, the highly anticipated Dune: Part Two, the historical Nickel Boys, and September 5, a gripping recount of journalists during an Olympic hostage crisis.
In the best musical or comedy category, the Broadway adaptation Wicked landed four nominations. It will compete against the dark romantic comedy Anora and other standout entries.
Emilia Perez features Zoe Saldana as a lawyer aiding a drug cartel leader’s (Karla Sofía Gascón) transformation and faked death, with Selena Gomez co-starring as the leader’s wife. All three received acting nominations.
Meanwhile, Adrien Brody earned a nomination for his role in The Brutalist, portraying a Hungarian immigrant rebuilding his life in post-war America.
Other acting nods include Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) for his portrayal of Bob Dylan and Angelina Jolie (Maria) for her depiction of opera singer Maria Callas.
In television, the restaurant drama The Bear leads with five nominations. Mystery-comedy Only Murders in the Building and historical epic Shogun each secured four nods, reflecting the Globes’ embrace of diverse storytelling.
The Golden Globes, often seen as a precursor to the Academy Awards, come amid a release schedule disrupted by Hollywood strikes. While Netflix dominated the film and TV categories with 13 film nominations and 23 TV nods, traditional studios still hold a presence.
The Globes voting body reformed and expanded to 334 journalists from 85 countries after previous controversies, underscores its commitment to greater transparency and diversity. Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the awards on January 5, marking her first time leading the event.
