Ghana: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flag Bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accepted his defeat in the 2024 Ghana Presidential Election and congratulated opposition leader and Ghana’s former President John Dramani Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the win.

Ahead of the official declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC), supervisors of the presidential election, the NDC announced at a media conference that its internal collation of the provisional results of the election suggests a massive victory for the Party.

Addressing the nation, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP’s own internal collation also suggested an overwhelming success for the main opposition party.

“I thank the almighty god for how far he has brought me, and I submit to his will,” said Dr. Bawumia.

The NPP flag bearer indicated that his decision to officially concede defeat was borne out of his commitment to the peace of the nation while avoiding unnecessary tension.

“It is important that the well-invested community continues to believe in the peaceful and democratic character of Ghana,” he added.

More than 18 million eligible voters were expected to elect the next President and 276 Members of Parliament in the election. This is Ghana’s 9th general election since it returned to multiparty democracy in 1992.

This will be the fourth time that an incumbent government will be handing over rule to an opposition power.
