London: Britain will seek support from United Nations Security Council members on Monday for its call to end hostilities in Sudan and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, the British Foreign Ministry announced.

As the UK currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council, Foreign Minister David Lammy is set to chair a vote on a draft resolution co-sponsored by the UK and Sierra Leone.

The resolution urges an immediate cessation of violence and emphasises the protection of civilians in Sudan, which has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023.

The war, sparked by a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has killed thousands and led to the world’s largest displacement crisis.

In his address, Lammy will highlight the UK’s unwavering commitment to Sudan, stating that, “The UK will never let Sudan be forgotten.”

Lammy will also announce a significant increase in Britain’s aid to Sudan, doubling the country’s contribution to £226 million ($285 million).

Additionally, Lammy is expected to criticise Israel’s restrictions on humanitarian aid in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

On the ongoing war in Ukraine, Lammy will reiterate Britain’s steadfast support, declaring that, “We will continue to stand with Ukraine until reality sets in Moscow.” David Lammy will deliver these remarks alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in a media briefing.
