Manchester: Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the new Manchester United head coach, replacing Erik ten Hag who was sacked with the club 14th in the Premier League.

The 39-year-old Portuguese coach, has signed a deal at Old Trafford until 2027 and will join the club on November 11.

The club said on its website that, “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.”

Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Amorim arrives at Old Trafford during the November international break.

Amorim’s first game in charge of United will be on 24 November against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Amorim has three more games as Sporting’s head coach, facing Estrela Amadora and Braga in the Portuguese league and Manchester City in the Champions League.

Ruben is among the most promising and highly regarded young coaches in European football as described by the club.

With a successful career both as a player and a coach, he boasts multiple titles, including two Primeira Liga championships with Sporting CP in Portugal, the first of which marked the club’s first league title in 19 years.

Manchester United paid Sporting an additional €1m (£840,000) on top of Ruben Amorim’s €10m (£8.4m) release clause for an early departure from his 30-day notice period. Amorim also marks a shift in club structure as the first United leader to hold the title of head coach instead of manager.
