Alabama: A tragic mass shooting unfolded late last night in the bustling Five Points South district, taking the lives of four people and leaving dozens injured.
Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald found out that “multiple shooters fired multiple shots at a group of people” in the popular nightlife area. Police arrived at the sight of Magnolia Avenue, where they discovered the bodies of two men and one woman.
A fourth victim later surrendered to their injuries at a local hospital. Authorities are looking into whether the shooters approached the crowd on foot or from a vehicle. As of now, no arrests have been made.
The incident happened outside a hookah and cigar lounge, where witnesses reported hearing gunfire, some of which appeared to come from a weapon possibly converted to a fully automatic.
Officer Fitzgerald stated that, “We have dozens of gunshot victims from this area. I’m told at least four of those gunshot victims are fatal.”
The shooting in Birmingham signifies one of over 400 mass shootings recorded in the U.S. so far in 2024. According to the Gun Violence Archive, a mass shooting is defined as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed. The grim statistics reported a concerning rise in gun violence across the country, with no signs of abating.
