Biden doubts peaceful transition if Trump loses 2024 election

Joe Biden had earlier warned that Donald Trump is preparing to challenge the election results again in November, similar to his actions in 2020.

Washington: President Joe Biden has expressed concerns about the possibility of a peaceful transfer of power if former President Donald Trump loses the upcoming 2024 presidential election. In an interview with CBS News, Biden stated, “I’m not confident at all,” reflecting his unease about Trump’s potential reaction to an electoral defeat.

Biden’s apprehension follows remarks from Trump, the Republican nominee, who suggested that the only way he could lose the election is if it were “stolen” from him. This echoes Trump’s stance from the 2020 election, where he refused to accept the results and claimed widespread voter fraud.

“If Trump wins, no, I’m not confident at all,” Biden initially said, before correcting himself: “I mean, if Trump loses, I’m not confident at all. He means what he says. We don’t take him seriously, he means it — all the stuff about if we lose, there’ll be a bloodbath, it will have to be a stolen election.”

In March, Trump warned that a loss in the upcoming election would result in a “bloodbath” for the US auto industry and the country as a whole. Biden’s team quickly criticised this comment, accusing Trump of inciting political violence.

Biden has made the protection of democracy a central theme of his 2024 campaign, highlighting the importance of respecting election outcomes. Last month, while discussing his decision to end his campaign, Biden contrasted his stance with Trump’s refusal to accept election results.

“Look, I’m not the guy that said I want to be a dictator on day one. I’m not the guy that refused to accept the outcome of the election,” Biden said. “I’m not the guy who said that he wouldn’t accept the outcome of this election automatically. You can’t love your country only when you win.”

On Wednesday, Biden reiterated his concerns, warning that Trump might again challenge the election results in November, similar to his actions in 2020. Biden also noted that Trump is positioning sympathetic local election officers to support his claims.
