Dortmund: England has secured a place in the European Championship final after a thrilling comeback against the Netherlands in the semifinals.

Ollie Watkins, substituted in for captain Harry Kane by coach Gareth Southgate, scored in the first minute of stoppage time, clinching a 2-1 victory for England. The team will face Spain in the title match.

Throughout Euro 2024’s knockout stages, England has provided dramatic moments, including a stoppage-time equaliser by Jude Bellingham to defeat Slovakia in the last 16 and a penalty shootout win over Switzerland in the quarterfinals. This series of crucial performances has kept fans on edge.

“If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last-minute wonder goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!” King Charles III said in a congratulatory message after the game.

England will play Lamine Yamal and Spain in the final on July 14th in Berlin, marking the nation’s first title match on foreign soil. England previously won the World Cup in 1966 and lost to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, both at Wembley Stadium.

The vibrant Dutch supporters at Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion fell silent after Watkins’ decisive goal. The Dutch fans, who had dominated the city center and marched to the stadium, saw their team initially take the lead. Xavi Simons, a 21-year-old Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, scored after dispossessing Declan Rice and firing a long-range shot into the far corner.

Kane equalised from the penalty spot after Denzel Dumfries fouled him in the box, bringing his tournament tally to three goals. The first half was marked by intense action, with both Dumfries and Phil Foden hitting the goal frame. The second half turned tight and tense, especially during a crucial two-minute spell when Bukayo Saka had a goal disallowed before Southgate substituted Kane and Foden.

Southgate’s decision to bring on Watkins and Cole Palmer proved vital. Palmer, who entered alongside Watkins, set up the winning goal, marking one of Southgate’s best tactical moves in his eight-year tenure.

As England prepares for the final against Spain, the team is poised to make history and bring back the Euro Cup to the country after 58 years.
