United States: Barbie, the highest-grossing movie of 2023, has received a lot of nominations for the 81st Golden Globes.
Nine awards, including picture (comedy or musical), screenplay, director, leading actress for Margot Robbie, supporting actor for Ryan Gosling, and three separate entries in the original song category, are up for grabs for Greta Gerwig’s pastel-coloured satire.
After losing out on nominations for Lady Bird and Little Women, this is Gerwig’s first time on the directing shortlist. With this haul, Barbie becomes the second-most-nominated movie in Globe history, behind only Nashville with eleven nominations.
Along with Oppenheimer, the movie whose unlikely partnership with Barbie significantly increased the summer box office, and the follow-ups to John Wick, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman, and Mission: Impossible, Barbie is also nominated for a new award for blockbuster films.
With eight nominations, including leading actor Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt for supporting actress, and Robert Downey Jr. for supporting actor, Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic of atomic scientist Robert Oppenheimer is trailing behind.
With seven nominations, Poor Things, a wild fantasy film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos about a woman reborn with a baby’s brain, performed better than anticipated, drawing equal recognition from critics as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Lily Gladstone is nominated in the comparable drama category, while Emma Stone is up for leading actress in a comedy or musical for the former. Gladstone’s rivals include Greta Lee for her romantic comedy Past Lives, Annette Bening for her swimming drama Nyad, Sandra Hüller for her Oscar-winning Anatomy of a Fall, and Cailee Spaeny for Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla.
