United States: American tech giant Google is reportedly working on a ‘Smart Search’ feature that will make it easier to find files on your phone.

Currently, the only way to find a file on your phone is to remember the file name by which it was saved. This frequently causes problems if you cannot remember the file name. The contents in the file are not searchable. According to sources, the search giant is about to change that.

As per the reports, Google’s Smart Search feature is currently under testing, and it allows users to search for files like images and PDFs on the basis of what is in them.

This feature works by using local machine learning technology to conduct a deeper search for on-device files. It can be used to access text in images and PDFs, location and objects in images, artists, albums, and titles from audio and videos.

On its support page, Google mentioned that users can “use text from a document or image to search for their files at the search bar when this feature is turned on.”

Explaining how the feature works, Google noted that, “To power this experience, Smart Search scans the files in the background with device performance and privacy in mind. Scanning happens on your device so your information doesn’t leave your device. You can turn off Smart Search anytime in the app’s Settings.”

There are a few limitations to this feature. For now, newly downloaded files don’t appear right away because file scans are only performed periodically.
