United States: Mr. Travis King, a US soldier, is having medical check-ups at a Texas base after being released by North Korea following a two-month detention.
A Pentagon official stated that the tests are meant to evaluate his emotional and mental well-being. The statement came shortly after his arrival in San Antonio.
In July 2023, the 23-year-old reconnaissance specialist crossed into North Korea from South Korea without authorization.
“He’ll be going through medical screenings, medical evaluations, and then he’ll be meeting with professionals to assess his emotional and mental health,” Pentagon spokeswoman Ms. Sabrina Singh stated.
Ms. Singh declined to say how long the reintegration programme may take, adding that he will also be getting debriefed by US military officials.
Ms. Singh refused to detail the potential punishment for Mr. King, stating to reporters, “we’re really focused on his health, reuniting him with his family.”
During his detention in Pyongyang, North Korean media claimed that he had entered their territory due to “inhuman treatment” and racism within the US military.
Swedish officials facilitated Mr. King’s release, bringing him to North Korea’s border with China.
Upon arriving in China, Mr. King was greeted by US Ambassador Nicholas Burns, who mentioned that Beijing had a “constructive role” but clarified that they “did not mediate” the release.
The US and North Korea lack formal diplomatic ties, and traditionally, negotiations on behalf of Washington have been handled by Sweden’s embassy in Pyongyang.
