United States: Mr. Donald Trump, former United States President, has surrendered himself to authorities in the state of Georgia over criminal charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The Republican leader appeared at the Fulton County Jail, less than a day ahead of his deadline to surrender, in an arrest that saw the first ever mugshot of a former US president.
It was Mr. Trump’s fourth arrest in five months in a criminal case, but the latest was his first police booking photo. The former president’s brief booking marks another moment in which the Republican candidate in the 2024 election was again under arrest in a major criminal case.
Mr.Trump had to pay a bail bond of $200,000 to be released from the Atlanta jail while he awaits trial.
According to the Republican leader, the cases against him are politically motivated because he is leading the Republican race to challenge President Mr. Joe Biden, a Democrat, in next year’s presidential election.
The former President faced his fourth indictment since leaving office when he was charged in a 41-count indictment by the Fulton County district attorney, Mr. Fani Willis, that referred to Mr. Trump and 18 allies as having engaged in a criminal enterprise to reverse his 2020 election defeat.
Mr. Trump’s co-defendants in the case were also released on bond, except for Mr. Harrison Floyd, who was associated with a Black Voices for Trump group and was accused of conspiring to commit false statements and illegally influencing a witness.
