France: Renowned Czech-French writer Mr. Milan Kundera, best known for his novel “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” has passed away at the age of 94, according to a statement from the Milan Kundera Library on 12th July 2023. Ms. Anna Mrazova, the library’s spokeswoman in Brno, Mr. Kundera’s birthplace, confirmed his death and stated that he had been battling a prolonged illness.

Mr. Kundera had been residing in France since his emigration from Communist-ruled Czechoslovakia in 1975. Throughout his career, he was celebrated as a novelist, poet, and essayist, crafting thought-provoking works that delved into the complexities of the human condition. His writing often featured elements of satire, drawing from his own experiences of dissent and the revocation of his Czech nationality.

Born on April 1, 1929, in Brno, Mr. Kundera pursued his studies in Prague. Alongside his own literary endeavors, he translated the works of French poet Mr. Guillaume Apollinaire and also dabbled in poetry and short stories. Mr. Kundera taught at a film school, where one of his notable students was the future Oscar-winning director Mr. Milos Forman.

In 1967, Mr. Kundera achieved a breakthrough with his novel “The Joke,” which centered around a young man expelled from university and the Communist Party due to an innocent joke. Despite being a former Communist himself, Kundera fell out of favor with the authorities following the suppression of the Prague Spring reform movement by Soviet-led armies in 1968.

After his relocation to France, Kundera joined the faculty at the University of Rennes. He faced significant backlash and scrutiny, and in 1979, he was stripped of his Czech nationality following the publication of “The Book of Laughter and Forgetting.” Mr. Kundera became a French citizen in 1981.

Known for his privacy and infrequent public appearances, Mr. Milan Kundera’s literary contributions have left an indelible mark on the literary world. His works continue to captivate readers with their profound exploration of human existence and social dynamics.
