United States: Twitter CEO, Mr. Elon Musk, has accused his rival, Mr. Mark Zuckerberg, of utilizing Twitter’s “trade secrets” and “other intellectual property” to develop Threads, a competing app. Threads experienced a remarkable launch, garnering over 50 million sign-ups within a few hours of its public release on Thursday.

Shortly after Meta, the parent company of Instagram launched Threads, Twitter issued a threat to sue Meta. Mr. Musk’s lawyer, Mr. Alex Spiro, penned a letter to Meta CEO Mr. Zuckerberg, which was published by the online news outlet Semafor. The letter alleged “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property” by Meta. It claimed that Meta had recruited numerous former Twitter employees who possessed and continue to have access to Twitter’s confidential information and trade secrets.

Threads represent the most significant challenger to Mr. Musk’s Twitter yet, as several potential competitors have emerged but failed to supplant one of the world’s largest social media platforms, despite its struggles.

This latest development has intensified the rivalry between the two billionaire entrepreneurs, who have even agreed to meet for a hand-to-hand combat cage match.

In a tweet, Mr. Zuckerberg broke his decade-long Twitter silence and posted a meme featuring Spiderman pointing at Spiderman, seemingly alluding to the similarities between Threads and Twitter.

Threads became available on the Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries at 11 PM GMT on Wednesday. Early feedback highlighted its close resemblance to Twitter, albeit with some scaled-back features.

Within a few hours of its release, Threads witnessed over 50 million downloads, as stated by Mr. Zuckerberg on 6th July 2023. He acknowledged the promising start but emphasized the substantial work ahead to further develop the app. High-profile individuals like Ms. Jennifer Lopez, Ms. Shakira, and Mr. Hugh Jackman already had active accounts on Threads.

Mr. Zuckerberg expressed his vision for Threads, stating his belief in the potential for a public conversation app with over 1 billion users. Twitter, on the other hand, boasts more than 200 million daily users.
