Meta to launch ‘Threads’ app to challenge Twitter

Described as a "text-based conversation app," Threads is expected to be a free service without restrictions on post visibility.

United States: Meta, the company behind Facebook, is set to launch a new app called Threads to compete with Twitter. The app, which can be pre-ordered on the Apple App Store, will be linked to Instagram and features a dashboard resembling Twitter.

Described as a “text-based conversation app,” Threads is expected to be a free service without restrictions on post visibility. However, it will collect user data, including location, purchases, and browsing history.

The rivalry between Meta’s Mr. Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter’s Mr. Elon Musk has escalated recently. In a playful yet ambiguous gesture, the two CEOs agreed to a physical fight. Mr. Musk responded to news about Threads by sarcastically praising its management. Meanwhile, Twitter has announced that its popular user dashboard, TweetDeck, will be placed behind a paywall within a month, as part of Mr. Musk’s efforts to promote Twitter Blue, the platform’s subscription service.

Several apps resembling Twitter have emerged in recent years, including Mr. Donald Trump’s Truth Social and Mastodon. However, Threads could pose the most significant threat to Twitter to date. Meta has a history of emulating successful ideas, such as Reels (similar to TikTok) and Stories (similar to Snapchat). With access to millions of Instagram accounts, Meta has the resources to compete effectively.

While Mr. Musk has been commended for his support of free speech, he has also alienated some users. Mr. Zuckerberg hopes to capitalize on any dissatisfaction among Twitter users and attract them to Threads, creating a viable alternative.
