United States: Former Vice President Mr. Mike Pence has officially declared his intention to run for the Republican nomination in the upcoming 2024 presidential race. With this announcement, Pence positions himself as a direct contender against his former boss, former President Mr. Donald Trump, who currently leads the Republican field. On 5th June 2023, Mr. Pence’s campaign filed a declaration of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, and the 63-year-old is expected to kick off his campaign on 7th June 2023 in Iowa, an early nominating state.

Mr. Pence, known for his staunch social conservatism and evangelical Christian beliefs, has increasingly distanced himself from Mr. Trump in recent times. This separation became evident when Mr. Pence rejected Mr. Trump’s demand to overturn the 2020 election results during his role as president of the Senate.

As Mr. Pence enters a crowded and expanding field of Republican candidates, including Mr. Trump, Florida Governor Mr. Ron DeSantis, Senator Mr. Tim Scott, and former South Carolina Governor Ms. Nikki Haley, the concern grows among Trump opponents within the Republican Party. They fear that the anti-Trump vote could be divided among the numerous candidates, ultimately benefiting Mr. Trump and granting him the party’s nomination.

In his campaign, Mr. Pence aims to present himself as a traditional Republican, emphasizing fiscal responsibility and family values. He intends to deliver Mr. Trump’s economic policies while projecting a sense of stability and avoiding the controversial drama associated with the former president. Mr. Pence has spent the past two years actively touring early-nominating states like Iowa and New Hampshire, reiterating his political vision as a “Christian, conservative, Republican – in that order.”

While his political stance aligns with traditional conservatism and appeals to many Republicans, critics question whether Mr. Pence has a strong constituency within a party that has shifted its focus towards populism and cultural politics. Nevertheless, his formal entry into the race adds to the already substantial pool of Republican contenders, with former New Jersey Governor Mr. Chris Christie also expected to join on 6th June 2023, bringing the total number of Republican candidates to double digits. Furthermore, North Dakota Governor Mr. Doug Burgum is reportedly planning to enter the race on 7th June 2023, as per a reliable source.
