Prince Harry to break 130-year royal tradition with court testimony

London, UK: Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is set to take the witness stand at London’s High Court in a trial involving Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN). The trial focuses on allegations of unlawful information gathering, including phone hacking, by the publisher. Prince Harry, along with other high-profile individuals, has accused MGN of engaging in illegal activities at its newspaper titles and is seeking damages.

This lawsuit is one of several legal actions initiated by the Prince against British newspaper groups since his withdrawal from royal duties in early 2020 and his relocation to the United States. The MGN trial commenced last month and is anticipated to last for up to seven weeks. Interestingly, it began just days after the coronation of King Charles III, which Harry attended.

During the initial stages of the trial, Prince Harry provided written submissions but did not testify in person. However, his upcoming appearance on the witness stand, scheduled for 6th June 2023, will mark the first time in 130 years that a senior British royal has given evidence in court. The last instance was Edward VII, who testified in a slander trial in 1890 before ascending to the throne.

Prince Harry’s testimony is expected to shed light on the alleged unlawful behavior of MGN and its impact on the privacy of the plaintiffs. More than 100 celebrities and prominent figures have joined the lawsuit alongside the Prince, seeking accountability and seeking redress for the invasion of their privacy.

This high-profile case further fuels the ongoing legal battles between Prince Harry and the British press. In recent months, he has been actively involved in challenging the media’s practices while also releasing a memoir and a documentary series on Netflix, in which he made accusations against other senior royals for colluding with tabloid newspapers.

Prince Harry’s testimony in the High Court trial against MGN is anticipated to bring greater attention to the issue of press intrusion and privacy rights, highlighting the challenges faced by public figures in maintaining their personal lives away from media scrutiny.
