    Iran executes Swedish-Iranian dissident convicted of leading separatist group

    Iran: Iran has carried out the execution of a Swedish-Iranian dissident who was found guilty of leading an Arab separatist group responsible for various attacks, including the 2018 military parade attack that claimed the lives of 25 individuals.

    On 6th May 2023, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB announced the execution of Mr. Habib Farajollah Chaab, who was sentenced to death for the capital offence of being “corrupt on earth” under Iran’s strict interpretation of Islamic law. The Swedish-Iranian dissident was found guilty of leading an Arab separatist group that was responsible for various attacks, including the 2018 military parade attack that claimed the lives of 25 individuals.

    According to a report Mr. Habib Farajollah Chaab, also known as Habib Asyud, was executed on the 6th of May 2023 morning. Mr. Chaab, who was the leader of the Harakat al-Nidal terrorist group, had been sentenced to death for his involvement in various attacks, and his execution was carried out in accordance with Iran’s strict interpretation of Islamic law.

    In 2020, Iran announced that its security forces had apprehended Mr. Habib Farajollah Chaab, who was based in Sweden, in Turkey before taking him to Tehran. However, the Iranian authorities did not disclose any information about the circumstances surrounding his arrest or provide any details about where he was captured.

    Currently, there are at least 16 individuals with Western passports, most of whom hold dual nationality, who are imprisoned in Iran.
