7 trapped in flooded Laos Cave as rescue teams race against time

Laos: Rescue teams in Laos are battling rising floodwaters and narrow underground passages in a desperate effort to save seven villagers trapped inside a cave for nearly a week in the central province of Xaysomboun.

The group entered the cave, searching for gold deposits and wildlife, but heavy rain and landslides blocked the entrance, leaving them stranded deep underground. According to local reports, one member of the group managed to escape and alert authorities, triggering a major rescue operation involving both Lao and Thai emergency teams.

Footage released by rescuers shows divers crawling through muddy, water-filled tunnels and squeezing through extremely tight passages in an attempt to reach those trapped. Rescue officials said some sections of the cave are only about 50 centimetres wide, making access highly dangerous and difficult.

Several experts who took part in the dramatic 2018 Thailand cave rescue, where 12 young footballers and their coach were saved after being trapped for more than two weeks, are now assisting in Laos. Bounkham Luanglath, head of Laos’ Rescue Volunteer for People, told that villagers frequently enter the cave in search of gold and other natural resources.

Rescuers have been pumping water out of the cave continuously while also clearing rocks and debris from the entrance. Teams managed to access deeper sections of the cave, but rising water levels have repeatedly slowed progress.

Kengkard Bongkawong from the Thai rescue group Metta Tham Rescue said crews believe they are getting closer to the trapped villagers. Bongkawong remarked that, “We are less than 20 metres away,” adding that water pumping operations have continued day and night.

So far, rescuers have not detected any signs of life, but operations remain ongoing as teams race against worsening conditions underground. The incident has drawn comparisons to the globally watched Thailand cave rescue in Chiang Rai in 2018, one of the most complex rescue missions ever carried out, which later inspired films and documentaries, including Thirteen Lives and The Rescue.
