Johannesburg: At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting at an informal settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, according to South African police.

Authorities said a group of more than 10 armed suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station before entering the settlement through different access points. The attackers allegedly moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.

Police officers responded to reports of an active shooting at approximately 23:10 local time. Emergency medical teams were also dispatched to the scene to assist victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

According to police, eight men and three women were pronounced dead at the scene. Another man later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, bringing the death toll to 12. At least nine people sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to various medical facilities for treatment.

A large-scale manhunt has been launched to track down those responsible for the attack. Investigators have not yet determined a motive, and authorities said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime, recording one of the highest murder rates globally. On average, around 60 people are killed daily across the country. Mass shootings in informal settlements are not uncommon and are often linked to gang-related activity, criminal disputes, or personal conflicts.

Last year, a separate shooting at a Johannesburg tavern left nine people dead. Police have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
