Spain: At least 30 people have died following a collision between two high-speed trains in Spain’s central province of Toledo on October 28, 2026, according to the country’s state-owned news agency and local media.

Several passengers have also been reported injured, although the full extent of the casualties remains unclear. Spain’s rail infrastructure operator, ADIF, confirmed that the accident occurred on October 28 morning. Train services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia have been suspended following the crash.

According to its initial reports, one train struck the rear of the other, causing two carriages to derail. Emergency services and civil protection authorities have been responding to the incident.

Sigo con atención y preocupación el accidente ferroviario ocurrido esta mañana en Urda. En estos momentos, me encuentro de camino hacia el lugar y tanto yo como el resto de mi Gobierno suspendemos nuestra agenda.

Manuel Galán, mayor of the nearby town of Urda, reported that passengers had sustained injuries. Galán stated that civil protection authorities had asked the town hall to prepare a sports pavilion to accommodate and assist passengers affected by the accident.

Jesús Pérez, mayor of the neighbouring village of Los Yébenes, described the incident as appearing to be serious. Meanwhile, Emiliano García-Page, president of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, announced on X that he was travelling to the accident site.

The crash comes with renewed concerns about railway safety in Spain following a deadly train accident in the country’s southern region in January. That incident claimed 45 lives after a train derailed and collided with an oncoming train, making it Spain’s deadliest railway disaster since a 2013 crash that killed 80 people.

The January accident raised questions about the safety of the country’s extensive high-speed rail network and undermined public confidence in the system. Authorities are continuing to respond to the latest incident, while further details about the cause of the collision and the final number of casualties are awaited.
