Cambodia: Mr. Hun Sen, a Cambodian politician and former military commander who has been the prime minister of the country for 38 years, has said he will resign and hand over the power to his son next month. This announcement came after Mr. Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party again won all seats in a recent election.
Mr. Hun Manet, the eldest son of Mr. Sen, will reportedly be the next Cambodian Prime Minister. Mr. Manet was the commander of the Royal Cambodian Army. The commander also won a seat representing the capital, Phnom Penh, in the election.
The Cambodian politician stated that his son would be appointed prime minister on 10th August 2023.
“I would like to ask for understanding from the people as I announce that I will not continue as prime minister,” Mr. Sen stated.
The newly elected parliament would convene on 21st Aug 2023, and the new Prime Minister and a new cabinet would be sworn in on 22nd Aug 2023, as per the statement.
45-year-old Mr. Manet took a leading role in the campaign for this year’s 23rd July 2023, election, frequently seen leading rallies alongside his father. The future PM, who was educated in the US and UK, was named as his father’s ‘choice of successor’ in 2021 and has been endorsed by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party as “future prime minister,” as per the report. Mr, Sen is the longest-serving head of government of Cambodia and one of the longest-serving leaders in the world.
