United States: US President Donald Trump has announced plans to form an ‘AI Force’ and appoint a new artificial intelligence adviser, or ‘AI Czar’, without providing details on how either initiative would operate.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the United States would not hinder the growth of the artificial intelligence industry and would instead support its expansion while addressing harmful uses through existing criminal and civil laws.
“For this purpose, I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force, which has been a tremendous SUCCESS, in my First Term,” Trump wrote. “To that end, I will be announcing, in the near future, the AI ‘Czar’.” Trump also described AI as the next major industrial and technological revolution and projected that the sector could eventually account for as much as 25% of US gross domestic product.
The announcement comes as concerns grow in Washington over the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence to people and property. Lawmakers and technology experts have increasingly debated AI safety, regulation and accountability.
Trump has repeatedly opposed additional federal regulation of the sector, arguing that excessive restrictions could slow the development of US artificial intelligence technology. The proposed appointment would mark Trump’s second AI ‘Czar’. Venture capitalist David Sacks previously held the position before stepping down earlier this year and moving into an external advisory role.
Sacks has also argued that AI developers should be responsible for the safety of their products and could face liability if problems arise, while maintaining that additional federal rules are unnecessary. The White House has not provided further details about the proposed AI Force, including its structure, authority or membership.
Trump’s announcement comes ahead of a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The United States and China are competing for leadership in artificial intelligence, with both governments viewing the technology as strategically important to economic and national security interests.
