London: The state of UK politics is more perilous now than in 2016 when MP Jo Cox was murdered, warns Jo Cox’s sister, Kim Leadbeater. The Labour MP, who now represents Cox’s former seat, Batley and Spen, expressed concerns over increasing threats to politicians’ safety and the detrimental impact on their mental health, indicating that UK democracy is in a “dangerous” place.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s program Broken Politicians, Broken Politics, Leadbeater highlighted the worsening political environment, citing increased division and anger. “Politics was in a pretty bad place at that time [2016]. There was a lot of division. There was a lot of anger,” she said. “Sadly, I would say, if anything, it’s worse.”

Leadbeater pointed out that elected officials often feel unable to speak freely or vote according to their convictions due to concerns for their safety and mental well-being. “That is a really dangerous place to be. That is not good for democracy,” she added.

Further illustrating the strain on MPs, Tory MP Elliot Colburn disclosed that members from all UK political parties have attempted suicide, reflecting the severe mental health crisis among politicians. Colburn himself has spoken openly about a suicide attempt in 2021.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has also warned of a potential descent into “mob rule” amid concerns over MPs being targeted by demonstrators, particularly regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The program Broken Politicians, Broken Politics had exclusive access to preliminary findings from a 2024 survey of departing MPs, underscoring the significant impact of their roles on mental health. Data from the House of Commons indicated that mental health issues are a leading reason for seeking medical services among Westminster staff.

Matt Hawkins, co-director of Compassion in Politics, emphasized the urgent need for reform. “We need to have a national conversation about the harm our political system is doing to anyone who seeks to work in it or with it,” he said. “Toxic debates, abuse, long hours, lack of autonomy – these are just some of the issues that are taking a massive toll on our elected representatives and their teams.”

Hawkins warned that the current environment negatively affects the very individuals chosen to represent public interests. “If we want to change our country for the better, we need to change our politics and help create a political environment that is inclusive, welcoming, supportive, and caring.”

The alarming state of UK politics, as highlighted by these revelations, underscores the critical need for systemic changes to protect the mental health and safety of those who serve in public office.
