United States: Twitter, recently rebranded as X, has reinstated American rapper Mr. Kanye West’s account after an eight-month ban over offensive tweets.
The rapper was accused of violating the platform’s rules prohibiting incitement to violence. As of 1st December 2022, Mr. Kanye’s account displayed his final post just one day before it got suspended.
Back then, Mr. Musk stated that Mr. Ye had breached their policy concerning incitement to violence, which led to the suspension of the account. Following a series of offensive tweets by the musician, one of which seemingly displayed a symbol merging a swastika and the Star of David, the account suspension ensued.
Two months prior to the suspension, the rapper, also known as Mr. Ye, faced a similar ban when he was initially locked out of his Twitter and Instagram accounts for posting anti-Semitic messages in October 2023. Both platforms took action and removed his offending posts.
In the same month, Adidas cut ties with the rapper, saying it did “not tolerate anti-Semitism or any other sort of hate speech.” In March of the previous year, Mr. Ye faced a 24-hour suspension from Instagram after using a racial slur in reference to comedian Mr. Trevor Noah.
Neither X nor its billionaire owner, Mr. Musk, made any public comments regarding Mr. Ye’s account reinstatement on 29th July 2023.
Last November, Mr. Musk reinstated former US President Mr. Donald Trump’s account following a poll in which 51.8 percent voted in favour of the reinstatement. Despite the reinstatement, Mr. Trump stated that he had no interest in returning to the site.
