Re-energised Biden strikes back after rough debate

At a rally in North Carolina, President Joe Biden declared he "fully intends" to win the November election, dismissing calls to step down.

United States: After a poor debate performance with Donald Trump heightened concerns about his age and mental sharpness, US President Joe Biden aimed to show confidence at a rally in North Carolina.

During his statements on Friday, Biden appeared to dismiss suggestions that he should step down so that a younger candidate might challenge Trump in the crucial race in November.

“I intend to win this election. When you get knocked down, you get back up,” Biden said, alluding to his debate performance the day earlier.

The address comes after what many political observers deemed to be Biden’s terrible performance versus Trump during Thursday’s debate. Biden’s comments, at times seeming rambling and unclear, eclipsed Trump’s incendiary words and bogus assertions.

At a Friday political rally in Chesapeake, Virginia, Trump, meantime, criticised Biden’s performance and leaned into the ominous rhetoric that has come to characterise his brand of politics.

“We have to take it back from that party. That’s an evil party. Despite the fact that crooked Joe Biden spent the entire week at Camp David [a presidential retreat] resting, working, studying. He studied very hard, he studied so hard he didn’t know what the hell he was doing. Joe Biden’s problem is not his age, it’s his competence,” Trump said.

Prior to the debate, many people had voiced concerns about Biden’s advanced age. His unsteady performance also sparked calls for his resignation to make way for a new candidate.

Although it’s still uncertain how prospective voters will react to Biden’s debate performance, Democratic Party executives appeared to be in a panic, according to media sources. For years, worries about Biden’s age have been considered a political weakness.
