Protesters in Colorado call for governor to issue gun ban order

The protest, which attracted an estimated 1,000 participants, including out-of-state protesters, received prior support from Hollywood actors such as Ms. Chelsea Handler, Ms. Amy Schumer, and Ms. Niecy Nash, who emphasized the alarming rate of gun violence-related deaths among American children.

United States: Hundreds of women gathered in a sit-in outside the Colorado State Capitol on 5th June 2023, demanding that the state’s Democratic governor, Mr. Jared Polis, enact a total ban on guns. However, the governor’s office promptly responded, stating that such a ban would be unconstitutional. The protest, organized by Ms. Tina Strawn and Ms. Saira Rao, anti-racism activists and founders of Here 4 the Kids, aimed to challenge America’s gun rights culture, which they argue is rooted in white supremacy.

Nevertheless, some long-time gun violence prevention activists in Colorado expressed reservations about the call for an all-encompassing gun ban, believing that advocating for such an extreme policy would be counterproductive to their ongoing efforts.

Ms. Rhonda Fields and Mr. Tom Sullivan, two Colorado state senators who tragically lost their children to gun violence, penned an opinion piece cautioning against the unintended consequences of pursuing an extreme solution. They argued that targeted legislation aimed at preventing high-risk individuals from accessing firearms had shown promise in Colorado. They feared that advocating for unrealistic measures could undermine and demoralize ongoing reform efforts.

While Here 4 the Kids gained significant traction on social media, amassing over 60,000 Instagram followers within two months of launching, experts such as political scientist Mr. Robert Spitzer viewed the call for a complete gun ban as unprecedented. Spitzer highlighted that the US Supreme Court has consistently upheld the individual right to own guns for self-defense since 2008. Consequently, Governor Mr. Polis lacks the authority to issue a general ban on firearms, rendering the protest symbolic and unlikely to result in substantive change.

Colorado gun rights activists largely dismissed the planned protest as baseless, with some labelling the call to ban guns as “ludicrous.” They expressed no intention to counter-protest the sit-in.

Despite the governor’s office repeatedly stating that Polis will not issue an executive order to ban guns, Here 4 the Kids vowed to continue their sit-in until their demands are met. However, the prevailing consensus suggests that the protest will be viewed as a marginal and non-serious moment in the broader effort to address America’s complex gun-related challenges.
