Manila : Philippines quake has resulted in 69 deaths and over 150 injuries after a 6.9-magnitude tremor struck the central region late September 30 night. The epicentre was located off the coast near Bogo city in northern Cebu province, which lies within a densely populated area.
Hospitals in Bogo have been overwhelmed following the Philippines quake, with officials reporting that emergency services are stretched as the government coordinates relief and rescue operations. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has assured affected residents of swift assistance, with cabinet secretaries actively directing support on the ground.
San Remigio, another town severely affected by the quake, has been placed under a state of calamity to facilitate response efforts. Vice Mayor Alfie Reynes highlighted urgent needs, including food, water, and heavy equipment to support search and rescue teams.
Residents have described dramatic scenes of families fleeing homes and streets as buildings collapsed, including a church more than a century old.

Among the fatalities were people caught in a partially collapsed sports complex in San Remigio. Multiple aftershocks followed the main quake, the strongest reaching magnitude 6. Authorities have confirmed there is no tsunami threat.
The Philippines is situated along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ making it prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Recent years have seen several major earthquakes in the country, though casualties vary depending on location and severity. Earlier in 2023, a 6.7-magnitude offshore earthquake resulted in eight deaths, while January saw two significant quakes with no reported fatalities.
Despite the destruction, Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the country’s second busiest, remains operational, helping facilitate relief supplies. The Philippine government continues to coordinate with local disaster offices to restore electricity and water in affected towns. Officials are also assessing structural damages and prioritising the safety of residents in quake-prone areas.
Authorities have called for vigilance in the coming days following the Philippines quake due to aftershocks and are urging the public to follow safety protocols while rescue and recovery operations continue.
