Los Angeles: LeBron James, one of the most influential figures in modern sports, has entered the toy world in a historic first—Mattel has unveiled a Ken doll in his likeness, marking him as the first professional male athlete to receive this recognition.
The doll is part of Barbie’s ongoing initiative to diversify its lineup and highlight inspiring role models across various fields.
Krista Berger, Mattel’s senior VP of Barbie, said the figure celebrates LeBron not just as a basketball legend but as a cultural icon who sets a positive example for younger generations. “We are excited to bring fans a new presentation of Ken,” she noted, praising James for his ability to transcend sports and embody leadership and inspiration.
The Ken doll mirrors James’ real-life 6ft 9in stature, standing an inch taller than the typical model. Rather than featuring him in a Lakers jersey, the doll is styled in his pre-game fashion—a varsity jacket emblazoned with “LJ,” an Ohio patch, a crown emblem, the number 23, and “LeBron” printed on the back, alongside his signature phrase: “Just a kid from Akron.”
Underneath, the doll wears a shirt reading “We Are Family,” referencing the work of the LeBron James Family Foundation. Accessories include a basketball, headphones, and sneakers.

In a promotional video, James was visibly thrilled upon seeing the doll. “Oh, he dope!” he exclaimed. Joking about the doll’s slim legs, he added, “He might have to do a little lifting.”
Despite his accolades—four NBA championships, two Olympic gold medals, and a historic scoring record—James said the Ken doll honor hits differently. “It’s an opportunity to recognize the powerful impact of role models who instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness.”
This launch also arrives at a sensitive time for Mattel, which has manufacturing ties to China—where nearly 40% of its production is based. Amid President Donald Trump’s escalating trade war with China, tariffs have surged to 125% on Chinese imports.
In response, Beijing imposed 84% tariffs on U.S. goods. Though Trump later paused hikes for some countries and proposed a universal 10% tariff amid negotiations, Mattel warned of possible price increases and supply chain adjustments as a result of the ongoing uncertainty.
While Barbie has previously honoured female athletes like Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, and Megan Rapinoe, LeBron James becomes the first male athlete—and the first male not from the entertainment industry—to be commemorated in doll form.
His appointment as “Kenbassador” marks a meaningful chapter in Barbie’s 65-year evolution, highlighting a broader, more inclusive future for the brand.
