Liverpool, UK: As per the event organizers, the city of Liverpool has been chosen as the host for globally renowned songwriting competition, Eurovision in 2023, bringing one of Europe’s most important cultural gatherings to the historic port city.
“The competition will take place on May 13, 2023, in the 11,000 seat M&S Bank Arena. The announcement marked the conclusion of an unusual selection process in which Eurovision organizers disqualified Ukraine, which had been awarded the right to host the event in 2019 after winning this year’s competition, on the grounds that the war-torn nation could not offer the required security and operational guarantees,
Ms. Claire McColgan, Head of Culture for Liverpool observed that, “hosting the Eurovision means everything for the city. We’re doing it for Ukraine first, for our wonderful city, and for the people that come here. It’s going to be amazing.”
Ukraine has proposed three areas that it claimed were secure from fighting, the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, the Zakarpattia region, which borders Slovakia and Hungary, and the nation’s capital, Kiev. However, the competition’s organizer, the European Broadcasting Union, declared in July that Britain will serve as the alternate host.
Beginning of 1956, Eurovision brought together musicians from many European nations as well as some outside of Europe, such as Australia and Israel. The most recent time Britain served as the venue was in Birmingham in 1998.
Liverpool will enjoy significant international attention as a result of the pick. In May, Kalush Orchestra, a Ukrainian rap group, was declared the victor in Turin, Italy, to the delight of more than 160 million viewers.
According to a recent article in a publication from Liverpool, “the city intends to work with Ukrainian street artists, designers, and musicians to introduce their culture to the city. At reference to the Ukrainians, Ms. Claire McColgan, the director of Culture Liverpool, told the newspaper that “this is their party, it just happens to be in our house.”
