Sydney: Australia has booked their place in the final of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over China, powered by a decisive strike from captain Sam Kerr.
The Australia women’s national football team captain delivered the winning goal from a tight angle in front of a crowd of 35,170, sealing a crucial semi-final triumph. Earlier in the match, Caitlin Foord had opened the scoring with a powerful first-time finish, before Zhang Linyan brought China level from the penalty spot.
The victory sends Australia into final in Sydney, where they will face either Japan women’s national football team or South Korea women’s national football team, as they aim to secure their second continental title. For Kerr, the moment carried special significance.

The 32-year-old was just 16 when Australia last lifted the trophy in 2010, even scoring in that final against North Korea. Reflecting on the latest achievement, she admitted emotions were running high, describing the squad as ‘family’ and the opportunity to win again as a dream.
Australia made an impressive start, with a fluid attacking move involving Ellie Carpenter and Mary Fowler setting up Foord’s opener. Carpenter’s pace on the flank and Fowler’s precise cut-back created the perfect platform for the Arsenal forward to strike.
Despite the strong opening, head coach Joe Montemurro acknowledged his side lost momentum during the first half, calling for greater bravery and a higher line of play. However, he praised the team for ultimately securing the desired result.
The tournament has also impacted club football, particularly in England, with a significant number of Australian players featuring in the Women’s Super League. Scheduling concerns have arisen ahead of the upcoming UEFA Women’s Champions League quarterfinal, which is scheduled just days after the Asian Cup final.
Adding to their achievements, Australia entered the semi-final having already secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup following their earlier win over North Korea. With momentum on their side and a place in the final secured, the Matildas now stand one step away from continental glory once again.
