United States: The United States has observed “early indications” that Russia may have played a role in the Azerbaijan Airlines crash on December 25, which resulted in the deaths of 38 people, according to White House spokesman John Kirby.
While Kirby did not deliver specific details, he confirmed that the US has offered aid in the ongoing investigation. Aviation experts and eyewitnesses have raised distrust that Russian air defence systems may have targeted the Embraer 190 aircraft as it attempted to land in Chechnya, forcing it to divert across the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan, where it ultimately crashed.
The Kremlin has refused to comment on these claims. Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, stated that, “An investigation into this aviation incident is underway, and until conclusions are made, we do not consider ourselves entitled to give any assessments.”
Rashad Nabiyev, Azerbaijan’s transport minister, said the plane suffered “external interference” and was impaired both externally and internally. Survivors reported hearing three blasts as the plane flew over Grozny, Chechnya.
Flight attendant Zulfuqar Asadov replicated the chaos onboard, stating that, “The impact caused panic. We tried to calm them, but then another strike occurred, injuring my arm.” Aviation analysts in Azerbaijan suspect the plane’s GPS was disrupted by electronic jamming, which may have forced it to stray into hostile airspace before being struck by shrapnel from missile explosions.
While Azerbaijan has not officially accused Russia, pro-government MP Rasim Musabekov stated that, “The plane was shot down over Russian territory, in the skies above Grozny. Denying this is impossible.” The crash has intensified scrutiny of Russian military operations in Chechnya, where ongoing Ukrainian drone strikes have reportedly confused the region’s security landscape.
Reports suggest that Russia and Kazakhstan have proposed a CIS-led investigation, but Azerbaijan is calling for an international inquiry instead. Kazakh authorities are currently treating the injured and collaborating with Azerbaijan on the probe.
The Embraer 190 pilots have been praised for saving 29 passengers despite sustaining fatal injuries during the crash. The investigation is expected to focus on determining the weapon or missile used in the incident. As tensions rise, the international community is watching closely to determine the determinations of this high-stakes aviation investigation.
