United States: Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian President, has pleaded for additional military aid as he arrived in Washington.
Speaking to military officials, Mr. Zelensky stated that Ukraine is not fighting just for its own freedom but for global democracy.
The US military aid package, worth $60 billion, which Republicans blocked last week after walking out of a classified briefing on Ukraine amid demands for border reforms. Mr. Biden has been urging lawmakers to approve the funds.
Mr. Zelensky criticized Republicans for obstructing the aid and called the delay a “dream come true” for Russian President, Mr. Vladimir Putin.
“If there’s anyone inspired by unresolved issues on Capitol Hill, it’s just Mr. Putin and his sick clique,” Mr. Zelensky argued.
Similar remarks from Mr. Zelensky are anticipated in a meeting with Mr. Biden on Tuesday at the White House. The Ukrainian leader will also meet US House Speaker, Mr. Mike Johnson, who is well-known for being sceptical of further military aid.
Mr. Zelensky is visiting the US for the third time since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. In a statement, the White House remarked that his visit was meant “to underscore the United States’ unshakeable commitment to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Russia’s brutal invasion”.
US White House Press Secretary, Ms. Karine Jean-Pierre, commented that, “As Russia ramps up its missile and drone strikes against Ukraine, the leaders will discuss Ukraine’s urgent needs and the vital importance of the United States’ continued support at this critical moment.”
